Specialty Services

Our specialists see patients by appointment and referral only. They use information provided by the referring veterinarian, as well as advanced equipment not available to many general practitioners, to provide the highest level of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities to their patients.

They also communicate regularly with the family vet to ensure that the pet owner and the pet receive the most thorough and compassionate care possible.

The relationship developed between the specialist and the family vet allows the pet to continue to receive long-term follow-up from a collaborating team of veterinarians.

Although the specialists in these areas are located at OSVS, they are always available for our doctors to consult with or refer patients to.

Emergency & Critical Care

  • 24-hour evaluation, monitoring and care of critically ill patients
  • Ventilator therapy and cardiovascular support strategies
  • Advanced fluid therapy
  • Transfusion medicine
  • Advanced management of perioperative and post-traumatic pain

The critical care specialist manages patients with severe, life-threatening diseases including heart failure, respiratory distress, and trauma. In addition, the critical care specialist oversees the emergency service and provides support for the emergency clinicians. Patients are hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) which is fully equipped with oxygen therapy, EKG monitors, pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors, a mechanical ventilator, and I-stat electrolyte and blood gas monitor. There is an extensive blood bank on site to allow emergency treatment of life-threatening blood loss, anemia, and other serious medical conditions. The ICU is staffed around-the-clock with highly skilled technicians capable of monitoring and treating these very critical and fragile patients.
