Specialty Services

Our specialists see patients by appointment and referral only. They use information provided by the referring veterinarian, as well as advanced equipment not available to many general practitioners, to provide the highest level of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities to their patients.

They also communicate regularly with the family vet to ensure that the pet owner and the pet receive the most thorough and compassionate care possible.

The relationship developed between the specialist and the family vet allows the pet to continue to receive long-term follow-up from a collaborating team of veterinarians.

Although the specialists in these areas are located at OSVS, they are always available for our doctors to consult with or refer patients to.

Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging

BSVES provides a range of diagnostic imaging services, including inpatient and outpatient abdominal ultrasound five days per week (Monday-Friday). Services include:

  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Cardiac ultrasound (Dr. Johnson only)
  • Musculoskeletal/cervical ultrasound
  • Ultrasound-guided biopsies and aspirates
  • Contrast studies
  • Teleradiology

The diagnostic imaging team includes one radiologist board certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR), one residency trained radiologist, and a specialist certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC).

Justine A. Johnson, DVM, DACVECC
Susan M. Newell DVM, MS, DACVR
Steven Tsai, DVM, ACVR board eligible

Our radiology department performs a variety of procedures including radiography (x-rays) and ultrasound. Ultrasound-guided biopsy procedures allow non-surgical biopsy of internal structures to obtain a rapid, noninvasive diagnosis of many conditions. The radiologists review all radiographs taken in the hospital. Additional services provided by our sister hospital OSVS in East Greenwich, RI include CT scans, MRI, PennHIP and OFA evaluation, and radioactive iodine therapy for cats.

In addition, Dr. Tsai and Dr. Newell provide teleradiology services and can remotely interpret imaging studies for any veterinary clinics with digital radiography (DR or CR) capabilities. If you are a veterinarian interested in referring cases for teleradiology, please contact us.
