The internal medicine specialist (internist) of BSVES is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). The internist is available for limited appointment hours at BSVES but can also be consulted through our sister hospital, Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. The internist diagnoses complex medical conditions through the use of special diagnostics, including extensive laboratory testing and diagnostic imaging (ultrasound, radiography, CT scan, MRI, and endoscopy. Patients with difficult to manage, uncommon, or more than one coexisting medical conditions benefit from the advanced training and experienced care of an internist.

The services of an internist include the treatment and evaluation of a wide range of conditions and body systems. Some of these conditions include:

  • Liver diseases
  • Cardiac diseases (heart)
  • Gastrointestinal diseases (anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss)
  • Urinary tract diseases (including bladder and kidney issues)
  • Hormonal conditions (including thyroid disorders, diabetes, Cushing’s disease)
  • Infectious diseases (tick-borne, bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases)
  • Respiratory conditions (asthma, pneumonia, laryngeal disease, chronic cough, collapsing trachea)
  • Neurologic disorders (diseases of the nerves, brain, or spinal cord)
  • Hematologic conditions (diseases of the blood cells)

  • Cerebrospinal fluid taps

  • Bronchoalveolar lavage and tracheal wash

    • Rhinoscopy (nasal cavity and nose)
    • Bronchoscopy (bronchi and trachea)
    • Upper gastrointestinal tract (removal of foreign bodies, biopsy)

    • Cystoscopy (bladder)

  • Ultrasound examinations and ultrasound-guided biopsies

The internist also performs specialized therapeutic techniques including:

  • Trephination (nasal fungal treatments)
